Bob looks for new ways to blow himself up. If vectors are about speed and direction, is there a course where speed is maximised or at the very least optimised? The answer is yes, but it is difficult to predict what that course will be, largely because there are usually too many variables to allow an easy analysis. Take for example the task of sailing out of a bay when there is a wind blowing directly into the bay. Sailing straight out of the bay is clearly impossible (speed equals zero and direction/course setting is extremely dangerous) whilst to go parallel to the coast affords a speed that is high but orthogonal to the desired direction— in effect you get nowhere since the effective speed is zero, although the course setting is very safe (provided you stop or turn before hitting the headland that forms the boundary of the bay).
