Separate runs were performed to evaluate the influence of cooling rate from 1100°C. A consistent observation was that the propagation kinetics of the wedge crack were strongly influenced by creep relaxation processes within the alloy. These were manifested by periods of zero crack growth during the early stages of cooling as the rate of increase of stress in the vicinity of the crack tip was reduced by stress relaxation.
