Women, in particular, are subject to social constraints outside of class which impact directly on independent learning opportunities. Learners typically do not have access to print or electronic learning resources beyond the Colleges and are not used to self-directed independent learning. Class sizes vary from 12 to 40 students. English classes are scheduled in two-hour blocks, five times a week. English is used as the medium of instruction throughout the degree program, with the exception of four or five College-required courses that are taught in Arabic; however, some lecturers use Arabic in classes to make the content more accessible.
Bell and Gower (1998) caution that situation-specific materials may discourage adaptation for particular groups of students. Nevertheless, we decided there was enough consistency of environment and needs (discussed later in this chapter) among our target groups to justify the development of a single course for them, so long as we made it as flexible as realistically possible. Nation and Macalister (2010, pp. 16–17), Cunningsworth (1995, pp. 3–4, 149–50) and Richards (2001) provide useful checklists of environmental factors to inform and evaluate course design.
