The essential difference between hydroponic and organic gardening is that in hydroponics refined nutrient salts are used. These salts are the same basic salts which the plant would get from soil anyhow, except that they have been refined and purified in the same way as sugar, or natural herbal medicines. The organic gardener uses manures and composts made of decayed organic matter for fertiliser. Plants cannot use any organic matter until it has been broken down into the basic chemical salts. The release of nutrient salts from organic matter is unpredictable and haphazard.
B)Pipe System: A hydroponic set up needs two different pipe systems … a large one and a small one. The small one consists of 100mm (four inch) diameter drainage PVC pipe with holes cut in it every 150mm (six inches) to take a small cup or pot filled with media for strawberries or herbs. The larger pipe system consists of a 90mm (six inch) PVC pipe with holes cut in it every 200mm (eight inches) to take a standard 15 cm pot filled with media for capsicums, tomatoes, zucchinis, and cucumbers, etc.
The channels requires a slight slope for the nutrient to flow. The slope will determine how fast the nutrient flows if there is not enough slope the nutrient will dam up around the roots of the plant and hence poor root aeration; if the gradient is too steep the nutrient will flow quickly and the film will be very thin, and some roots will be starved of food and water. The latest establishments are very sophisticated and mechanised. The nutrient flow technique used for lettuce is commercially viable, and there are a very large number of successful installations.
