These findings suggest that strongly negative responses are associated with childhood and adolescent depression, and that DAS can serve to identify some but not all depressed children and adolescents. Age and Gender Differences in Attitudes Toward Self and Others In this study, DAS responses by 360 subjects were separated into drawings about solitary subjects and drawings about relationships, assigned to age and gender groups, and scored on the rating scale (Silver, 1993a). The study was undertaken because it had been reported that males tend to focus on independence and competition, whereas females tend to focus on relationships and caring for others (Tannen, 1991; Gilligan, Ward, Taylor, & Bardige, 1988).
