(H 67, P 99) A linguistic sign is not a link between a thing and a name, but between a concept and a sound pattern.
The two disagree only on when its reality can be definitively asserted. In Diver’s reading of Saussure, la langue exists prior to analysis, whereas for Diver its existence is truly known only after determining its individual structural features in detail. This hard-nosed position served as the starting point for Diver’s incisive critique of the western grammatical tradition, for it applies indifferently to any and all conceptions of linguistic structure, from traditional grammar’s parts of speech to Chomsky’s Universal Grammar.
